Is Your Child Struggling in School?

Many parents spend a lot of time and energy trying to ensure that their children the best education possible. Parents help with homework, provide many opportunities after school and stay in touch with teachers and school to help your child succeed. However, when all is said and done, the child must be able to learn and pass the curriculum requirements.
Some parents may have sailed through Did you know that the school system is only able to cover 50% of the learning needs of students?
That’s it! – Only 50% of the student in a school environment that allows them to be successful students.
The reason is not because of bad teachers.
There are many excellent teachers, dedicated to the school, whose life work and passion is to educate students to the best of its abilities. Teachers want their students to succeed, so we have years of training and service. Not the fault of teachers that many students fail to reach their learning potential.
It is the result of poor education.
their own school experience and have been successful in the academic requirements for graduation, and gone to higher education. Is it unreasonable to expect their children to follow their example and get good grades? For some children, yes it is a reasonable expectation, and many, of course, follow in the footsteps of their parents. However, this can not be true for all children, even in the same family. I myself was a good student, enjoyed my school experience and I learn. I went on to become a teacher for over twenty years in the school system, was director of two schools, and pioneer of independent achievement. All three of my children are intelligent and have received equal opportunities with regard to their education. Of the three, only one is following my steps.
I was less diligent with two of my children, I can not help them? Do not give them the support they need to succeed in school? Absolutely! They were indifferent teachers and lack of support for their education? Not at all! The problem is that as parents we can not go to school for them. Sometimes it seems that parents would be easier if we could!
Is the school system bad?
There are many excellent schools where some students are able to thrive and excel in their learning. For students in schools meets the needs of their learning styles and motivates them towards success in their educational experience. The school system is not bad for these students is good. However, the nature and structure of the school system means that it is only able to meet the needs of specific learning styles and personality traits of their students. For a fairly large number of students across the school day is an achievement in itself. Intelligence and motivation to learn, are not the problem for them, but the school structure and environment itself. An example of a student was Albert Einstein. He found school very boring, as learning tools in those days had to do with repetition and learning by heart. Learned to read was at school and talk to interesting people he met, the school itself. He spent most of his time in his reverie classes. The system has no room for creativity and imagination, allowing you to learn about what interested him. There is no provision in your school system for people who think differently.
Many students today, whose learning styles are not addressed in the school system are likely to be dismissed or labeled as lazy, hazy, and unintelligent, disorganized, ADHD or a learning disability . School for many of these students is an endurance test, some do not. The school experience can devastate their confidence and self esteem because of their inability to adapt or adjust to the expectations of the system and those around them. However, these same students as adults can be a great success because of its entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, ability to think outside the box and see the world from a different angle.
If your child has difficulty in school, there may be a reflection of his father, teacher or school. Your child may be trying to learn in an environment that conflicts with his natural ability and learning style. To ensure that your child might be like trying to learn to swim in an ocean of sand! Look beyond the “normal” expectations and see the situation through the eyes of his son. You might be surprised! How about a little research on the school experience of Albert Einstein and many other leading figures in our history? I think it is possible to see things from a different angle.

How to Study and Review for a Test

The best way to study is to do what works for you. Do what facilitates learning and memory for YOU, because everyone is different and music may help one person study while another person ends up going to a club instead. Some of these tips are not going to help, some will- but try them and find out- you’ll never know what works and what doesn’t unless you genuinely give it a chance.
1

Review for a test, again and again.

2

GET THE REVIEW
The class that you really don’t want to miss is the one in which they review for the exam!!! Sometimes your instructor/professor will be cool and just tell you what to focus your studies on. Sometimes they do this anyways, you just have to look for their cues. They are just people too, and they give away what they find important in their tone of voice and body language. Professors/instructors will speak louder and clearer when they are talking about what they feel is important. They will also repeat themselves, sometimes they’ll flat out say, “…and this is really important” – if they find the info important, then you need to as well! Imagine yourself writing a test, are you going to include information you find important? The correct answer is yes.

3

TAKE GOOD NOTES
The same advice in the previous paragraph applies here: be sure to write down what your professor or instructor finds important. On the same day that you went to class and took the notes, go home and re-write or review them while it’s still fresh on your mind.

4

MEET WITH A STUDY GROUP
Different perspectives on one topic are always helpful. What you might miss, another person in your study group may have written down. If good grades are important to you, then meet with a study group. It doesn’t have to be very formal either- just a few classmates at a coffee shop comparing notes and quizzing each other. Also, if you miss a day, you now have a few people to get notes from!!

5

SCAN THE TEXT AGAIN
The night before and in the days leading up to the test skim through the chapters that are to be covered. Read the first few paragraphs, the last few and the highlighted sections. When you do your first read of the textbook, highlight important concepts so that you can just read those before the test. That’s why the bookstores sell all those highlighters!!

6

USE MUSIC
Music can help you recall information, so if you can focus while listening to music, I’d recommend listening to something different for each subject or class. Then when you are taking the test, imagine that music and hopefully your brain will also pull up the material you studied while listening to it.

7

SCENT- Scent is linked to memory. Smell has been linked to memory in many studies, which you can use to help you recall information for a test. Burn a scented candle for each subject, or use incense sticks or oils. For example, use lavender-scented candles while you are studying Psychology, and sandalwood for Math, etc.

8

COLOR
Use a different color highlighter for each topic. While you are taking the test, close your eyes and imagine that color to help recall the information. This is sort of like the scent/memory concept, except color and memory hasn’t necessarily been linked. But try it- maybe it’ll help and you can do research on it, write a book and make a million bucks!

9

FLASHCARDS

Study with flash cards. Here’s a proven technique- write a word on one side of the flashcard, and the definition or concept on the other. Quiz yourself again and again until you know it well. This really does work, by the way.

10

MNEMONICS
Using mnemonic is another proven study method. There are many ways to do this, but the basic idea is to make acronyms out of the words and concepts you are trying to recall. For instance, if you were trying to memorize this article, I would take each step and use one word to represent the concept like this: Review, Notes, Group, Text, Music, Scent, Color, Flashcards, Mnemonics. Then you can make an acronym out of this and create a sentence with the first letter of each word, or a rhyme, or song or whatever. The acronym for this article could be RNGTMSCFM — which really doesn’t spell out anything. But you can make it mean something to you to help you remember these concepts. There’s almost limitless ways to use mnemonics to recall information for tests, or anything you must remember. Check out the resources and try Google-ing “mnemonics” for more ways to study for a test. Good luck!!

These tricks are definately useful in all class environments. For even more effective techniqes, visit Click Here!

Online Insurance School ? Does it Really Work?

Can an online insurance school help you prepare for the insurance exam in your state? No matter what state you live in, the insurance exam is sure to be a long a difficult test. Generally, the more laws and regulations that pertain to an area of expertise, the more difficult the licensing exam will be – and there are a lot of laws pertaining to insurance. In order to pass the exam you will need to study effectively. Although many states require classroom pre-licensing courses, many do not. If your state does not require classroom study consider taking your pre-licensing course online.

Online insurance school has many benefits to recommend it – ease of access, flexibility, the ability to work at your own pace and exam simulators that allow you to test your knowledge before the state does. When you sign up to an online education provider you will create a unique log-on, this ID will serve you throughout the course of your studies and will ensure that you start each session at the point you left off the last. Online learning is extremely flexible, allowing you to fit your studies around your busy life.

One of the key benefits of using an insurance school on the internet is the ability to control the pace of your learning. Unlike in a classroom situation where the pace is dictated by the group and the lesson plan, when you are self-studying you can move quickly through the sections that provide little or no challenge to you, and take extra time in those that are more difficult. You can review sections as many times as is needed to grasp the material and then you can run the test simulator to gauge how you are progressing. Studies have proven that learning in this fashion is extremely effective and students retain information for longer periods of time.

Taking your pre-licensing insurance course at an online insurance school can really work for you. It will require a discipline though. Plan to spend as many hours each week in front of your computer as you would in a classroom course. It does not have to be at a regularly scheduled time, but the equivalency in hours should be there. In the end run, like all educational opportunities, you get out what you put in. To learn more about studying for your insurance license online, log on to the internet and search for online insurance schools.

How to study and do well in examinations.

How to study and do well in Examinations.

By Sarjeet S. Gill.

Many students do not do well in examinations because they basic skills and knowledge on what to study and how to study. Many students wrongfully believe that they do not do well because the examinations are difficult. Further, students fail to obtain a working knowledge of the syllabus and materials which students are expected to know and understand.

All students studying for examinations must clearly understand what is expected of them in terms of the course materials. This is clearly laid out in the syllabus and course materials. The questions will come directly from the syllabus and the course materials. Studying excessively in an unguided and unfocussed manner is useless because the studied material useful for answering questions therefore of limited use.

In addition to studying the right materials students must use the correct study technique in order to retain the maximum amount of relevant materials. Very few educational institutions teach students to study effectively. In order to do well in exams the right materials must be studied in the right manner. I have said sufficient about studying the right materials now I am going to focus on the technique of studying.

How to improve your studying skills?

Pace and prepare yourself by knowing the amount of time you have to get finetuned for the examination. If the course materials are more than you need more time to prepare yourself. The reverse may be the case if the course materials are less. So setting aside the right amount of time is of the essence. Effective time management should include the preparation of a timetable or a proper / detailed schedule.

Every serious student needs to set aside a place to study. The place must be quiet and have a table, chair, and proper lighting. It should be away from the TV set, kitchen and dining areas. Other necessary equipment includes note taking materials, and proper writing materials. A good study environment is one in which there are minimal distractions. Some students will say that they study best with background music but this is not supported by research. The background music is a distraction and interferes with retention of learned materials.

As a Lecturer in a major university I used to give the following study tips to students doing my units. I have reproduced them for all students below.

1. Get to know the course materials really well, particularly when preparing for the examination. Remember, the final examination questions are going to come from these materials. Not knowing the materials will result you studying the wrong things and wasting your time. End result: Wasted time, effort, and money. These behaviours make for bad experiences which have many long term implications which are negative and depressing.

2. Get to know your lecturer. He may give hints as to what is more important. Further use your lecturer to get answers to difficult to understand topics. Do not put off studying the materials just because you know your lecturer.

3. Some lecturers and teaching assistants offer extra classes for students who request extra help. Make use of these sessions. When participating in extra classes it is important to come prepared because the lecturer will be observing the students that show up closely because the student count is low in such classes.

4. Some lecturers use power points for teaching. If you feel that they are helpful ask the lecturer for a copy. Other lecturers give study notes and guides. Use these aids to prepare for the examinations. Do not rely too heavily on study sheets because the information is usually in summary form. So please read the recommended text books and suggested reading materials.

5. Many lecturers and Universities recycle the course materials and examination questions. So it is a good practice to be able to answer previous years questions. A portion of them will be repeated. If your course is new then there will be no previous years questions. Keep a tab on what the lecturer is saying. Many lecturers give hints and clues on what to study. Remember, your lecturer wants you to do well because it improves his performance record.

6. When you are doing academic work note the contents of the course carefully. Some parts of the course are always more important than others. Some parts do not lend themselves to good questions for an examination. So spend less time on unimportant areas of the course.

7. I usually told my class what was more important and what was less important. All nursing students will know that Diabetes, Myocardial Infarctions, Cerebrovascular accidents and wound management are major topics and there will always be questions on these topics.

8. Lecturers cover examination topics in greater detail than other topics. So if your lecturer is spending a lot of time going into many details then he is actually telling you that the topic is important and may be the focus. It is for this reason I told my students not to miss my lectures. So if you really want to do well in your examination study your lecturer for his favourite topic, types of questions he asks in class, his area of expertise and go through his previous questions.

9. Note taking helps during revision. However, note taking reduces the amount of material that is retained during the lecture because when a student is busy writing then he is not able to focus on all that is said.

10. It is a good idea to know your lecturer’s interests and background. Examination questions are usually from the lecturer’s favourite topics and areas of expertise. A lecturer is unlikely to ask an examination question about a topic he is not comfortable about. It is up to the student to find out what the lecturer likes.

11. Many students use flash cards for constant revision of hot topics. This is good because it will help you remember and reinforce the main points. However, extensive reading must also be done. Extensive reading helps you to tine the new knowledge with what you already know.

12. Last but not least all students must be able to manage their time effectively to study successfully. Here are a few tips on time management.

a. Appropriate Prioritization is important. Set aside more time for materials which need more attention or study time. Most students are good in one or two topics, average in about the same amount and poor in the subjects they dislike. The subjects that are disliked can be turned into subjects that are liked by reading extensively and understanding the importance of the contents.

b. Academic life should not just consist of studying and studying. Set aside time for socializing, exchanging views and discussing course contents with other students. These activities will reinforce what you already know and help you to know the areas which you need to improve.

c. Avoid over committing to studying. You must set aside some time for relaxation, entertainment, quality rest between periods of intensive study.

d. Active studying is a tiring process. Short sleep breaks help retention of learned materials. DO NOT study intensively and then go for a game of competitive tennis. All learned materials will be lost.

e. After learning intensively it is a good practise to have a kip. A kip is a small sleep. Research shows that sleep helps the brain organise the learned material and improves retention.

f. Avoid procrastinations. This is the major reasons for poor performance of students. Students put off studying until the last minute. Then, at the last minute they become overwhelmed by the amount of work that has to be covered. This is a sure way to fail.

g. Time tracking is another useful tool for studying effectively. If you find that you have not covered half the topic after you have spent half of the allocated time then you need to study faster or increase the time allocated for that work.

h. Take responsibility for actioning tasks. It is your responsibility to act and do the things you have to do. No amount of forward planning will get you the desired results if you do not execute the plans you have made.

Studying Your Study Environment

How familiar is this scene, “Sweetie, have you done your homework? Yeeeees Mom, I am finishing it right now!” You peek around the corner only to find the TV on, dim lighting,, and your student plopped on the couch, eyes glazed over, half asleep, but sincerely holding on to that vocabulary list or calculator, as if trying to channel the information into their mind. If your student isn’t quite old enough to realize the comfort that comes with studying this way, careful, it’s probably coming. If this scene is indeed familiar to you, don’t worry. It’s familiar to many families all across the country. The problem is that most students are never taught the practical and necessary study skills required to succeed in studying, test taking, and retention.

While there are many issues we could raise with this scene, we’re going to discuss what’s probably the most overlooked study skill that will help your student improve the way they study, and in turn improve the way they perform in school, setting a study environment.

∑ The most obvious problem with our student’s study habits is that it, in no way-shape-or-form, mimics that of their test-taking environment.

Your memory uses triggers to recall information, whether it is words, pictures or noises our minds naturally make mental associations between information intake and the environment in which it is taken. It’s similar to when you hear a song that makes you remember high school, or see a painting that reminds you of a vacation you once took. You never purposely made those connections; your brain did it automatically. It’s the same with studying.

∑ Many students will put forth an effort to actually make triggers in order to remember information, like using acronyms or word associations. But there are many of other connections our minds make and we don’t even realize it.

∑ Studies have shown that if students could study in the exact environment that they test in, performance would rise drastically. Why? It’s because our minds remember environment. Using this information, we can deduce that if in class you are sitting up straight, at a desk, with no distracting noises or voices, this is how you should study. While it is very rare to be able to study in the exact same environment you take tests in, every effort should be made to make it as close as possible. This may mean turning off the television, sitting at a table or desk instead of sitting on the couch, and even turning off the television. (Unless music is classical, which has shown to be beneficial when played softly in the background, music should be omitted too.)

∑ Improving your study environment can almost guarantee better performance. Sometimes the smallest effort to improve any aspect of studying, whether it be environment or something else, can make al the difference on test day and even contribute to remembering it long after.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of books written on study skills, promising improved performance. Chances are each and every one has something good to say, but all the books and tips in the world can’t help a student that studies in front of the television eating cookies. So often all we need is that small incremental step in the right direction to drastically improve results in the end. It’s much more effective to attempt small or practical study goals. Improving your study environment is a seemingly common sense improvement, but is overlooked by many parents. By making this effort you will be setting your student on a track for improved study habits that will stay with them and yield results for years to come.

There are enormous benefits being offered by special education schools, some of them are listed below:

Through special education being provided in such schools helps children to feel special. They and take part in various social activities like a normal child which is really encouraging for them. Parents should also treat their abnormal child specially, they should make child feel as if he is a part of the family.

Behaviour modification skills are being dictated in these schools to change all the unwanted activities being done by your child. In order to accomplish this, you should reward your child with the things he likes so that he will be motivated to adapt all the good habits in him.

Giving compliments to your child with pleasing praises is really effective way of teaching him; this is technique being followed by tutors in special education schools.

Very important task to be done by parents and tutors is, identifying warning signs of the child so that you may recognize his needs and requirements.

All the needed skills of the child are being provided in the special education schools with special childcare programs. Parents should know the special needs of his child so that you can tell tutors about the needs of your child.

Needed knowledge and assistance should be provided to your child consistently by preparing special routine which is easily noticeable by your child.

Schools departing special education to children have organized and well executed routines which could be easily followed by them. It is suggested by special education programs that you should make use of similar words every time your child is praised.

Very important thing to be considered is that you should find a support group in your community as this is the best possible way of providing ample motivation to your child with entire family.
